WATA Protocols

wata protocols edition1 covers grid web

A PUBLISHING ARM & LIVING ARCHIVE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, CULTURAL MEMORY, AND DIGITAL HUMANITIES.

WATA Protocols operates as a hybrid editorial platform where each issue serves as both a publication and a catalyst for collaborative engagement. Invited artists respond to the themes, theories, and critical questions emerging from each edition, translating them into site-specific research, artistic interventions, and public dialogue.

ABOUT THE EDITORIAL

Inspired by a network architecture, a protocol is a shared baseline agreement: a system of rules that allows distinct nodes to interface and exchange data across boundaries. WATA Protocols adopts this logic as an editorial methodology and visual narratives, establishing an experimental container for artistic research, material culture and the digital humanities.

Our practice is situated in the unresolved territory between inquiry and outcome. We understand the research process and the artistic intervention as conditions of thought, each with its own aesthetic and epistemic value. Rather than subordinating one to the other, we hold the creative and the critical in deliberate tension. WATA Protocols will also operate as an active platform for artistic research in progress.

Memory as Material

Archives, oral traditions, craft and data are art media, not just subjects of study.

The Unfinished as Thought

Research in progress is given the same space and weight as finished work.

Protocol as Translation

The publication connects multidisciplinary, print and digital.
